Save it before you go

  1. Open What Word Fits over HTTPS while connected to the internet.
  2. Expand Take the words with you, then choose Download for offline use.
  3. Keep the page open until it says Ready for offline use. The download saves the application and all dictionary files, about 49 MB of dictionary data before browser storage overhead.
  4. Bookmark the site. Disconnect, reload it and try a new search before relying on it away from a connection.

The offline download covers anagrams, synonyms and missing-letter searches. It also saves these guides and the dictionary licence notices.

Why are cached searches so quick?

Searching happens on your device. On your first search, the browser downloads the dictionary files it needs and checks them. Choose Save dictionaries as I search to keep those files for later visits; this is off by default. The complete offline download is a separate choice and saves every dictionary whether the checkbox is on or off. Later searches can read those saved files instead of waiting for the network again. Recently used data can also stay in memory while the app is open.

That removes download time for saved files; speed still depends on your device and the size of your search. There is no fixed millisecond promise. Broad patterns can take longer than a narrow anagram.

Is one cached search enough for offline use?

Not for every search. A new word, length or tool may need a different dictionary file. Use the complete offline download and wait for the readiness message to cover all the supplied dictionaries. If you cancel a download, completed files are kept and the next attempt reuses them.

Keep your saved words available

Use the same browser and the same address, https://whatwordfits.com. A different domain or browser has separate storage. Browsers can remove saved data when space is low, and private browsing may discard it when you close the window. Recheck offline use before a trip.

Switching off saving as you search stops new files being saved, while existing saved dictionaries remain available. Clear dictionaries removes saved dictionary data and switches off saving as you search. If an update is offered, choose Update and reload while connected. A complete old offline installation is kept until its replacement is ready.

Free, with no ads or account

There are no ads, trackers or sign-ups. Search history is not saved. Searches stay on your device, although the hosting provider receives requests for pages and dictionary files while you are online. Any optional support link opens a separate payment provider's website and needs a connection. Read the privacy and storage notice for details, including hosting diagnostics and how to remove saved application files.
