Missing-letter word finder
Know some of the letters but not the word? Fill crossword gaps and explore word patterns with a free tool that searches on your device.
Find words from the letters you know
Open Missing letters, enter c?t, and select Find words. The question mark is one missing letter, so matches include cat. For a longer example, z?b?a can find zebra.
Two kinds of wildcard
- ? or . stands for exactly one letter. Use one per empty square.
- * stands for any number of letters, including none. Try inter* for entries beginning with inter.
A pattern matches the complete normalised entry. For example, cat matches that entry, while *cat* looks for entries containing those letters in that order. Spaces, hyphens and apostrophes are ignored when matching letters.
Use the answer length to narrow a search
An integer such as 7 counts all letters. An enumeration such as 3,4 or 3-4 requires two words of those lengths, in that order. The word boundaries are preserved for this check, even though punctuation and spaces are ignored by the pattern.
Broad patterns can produce many matches. The tool keeps up to 1,000 results and shows 100 per page. If you see a plus sign, add a length or more known letters to narrow the answer.
Different starting point?
If the letters can be rearranged, use the anagram solver. If you have a word with a similar meaning, try the synonym finder. These tools suggest dictionary entries; check that an answer suits your clue and your puzzle's dictionary.
